Essential Oils
So far, we’ve discussed a couple of great natural home remedies, let’s now move on to essential oils. Essential oils have so many amazing healing properties that can help to heal your skin. Many contain antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties, all of which are great at helping to eliminate skin problems and acne. The essential oils we will be examining are listed as follows:
Melaleuca (Tea tree essential oil) is a great acne treatment. Primarily, it helps to combat the bacteria that causes acne. It also has antiinflammation, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties. You can apply it straight to your skin using a cotton ball, or if you have sensitive skin, you can dilute it with a carrier oil of your choice. A good recipe to try is a ratio of 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil to 9 teaspoons of water. Simply apply to face.
Lavender essential oil is great for helping to soothe the skin and will help with any marks that may be on your skin. A great idea is to add this to a moisturizer for daily treatment. Simply apply it twice daily to the affected area.
Rosemary essential oil consists of anti-inflammatory components that help to reduce the redness of the skin, specifically if that redness is caused by acne. Rosemary essential oil also helps to provide you with smooth and soft skin, leaving you feeling much healthier, fresher, and revitalized. It also helps to eliminate excess oil due to its anti-bacterial agent. Rosemary essential oil can also be used as a moisturizer for your skin, which is essential for combatting acne and skin problems.
The next essential oil, roman chamomile essential oil has excellent calming properties for your skin. It is also excellent for combatting and reducing acne problems. You can mix a few drops with a carrier oil and apply on your face pretty regularly in order to treat skin problems.
Now, an important concept to understand about essential oils is that they are very strong. Therefore, it may be a good idea to dilute the oil with a carrier oil. Generally, a good ratio is 10-12 drops of essential oil in 30ml of carrier oil. It’s also important that you keep in mind that some people get results very quickly, while some take more time before they can get a positive reaction. Your skin type can also make whether or not the oils work different when compared to another person. However, keep in mind that essential oils are a great way to provide natural proper care to your skin. They are great for treating acne and many other skin conditions, and as such should be considered when trying to treat acne. Finally, be sure to always conduct a patch test on your skin to avoid any reactions. As always, please consult your doctor before starting anything.
DIET
Alright, now let’s consider some items you can incorporate into your daily routine in order to combat acne and any skin problems. Diet is something to always consider when dealing with any sort of health problems, even such problems such as with your skin. What you put in your body is going to come out in some way, shape or form, and it can even come out through your skin. Studies have shown that acne can actually be triggered by what you eat. It may take some experimentation on what food is actually triggering acne, but if you can take the time to figure that out and eliminate that food from your diet, you can clear your acne up naturally and pretty easily!
The first thing to consider is the GAPS diet (look it up!). It may break the cycle of acne for your life, as well as having numerous other health benefits, specifically for your digestive system and gut! It might also be a good idea to start avoiding caffeine, as caffeine can severely magnify your body’s response to stressful events, as it stimulates the production of the stress hormones in your body, thereby increasing your chances of having acne. This stress can also weaken your immune system and make it harder for your skin to fight off the bacteria and heal. Another food to consider knocking out is sugar. Sugar actually wreaks havoc on our bodies in every way possible, and thus should be avoided by any means necessary. Sugar does things such as messing with our glucose levels. Glucose is a very important part of our insulin process. Insulin’s role in acne is that it makes our bodies produce excess oil, as well as significantly increasing inflammation in our body, which will in turn cause our breakouts to become redder and more swollen.
Now, some good foods to try are those that are rich in vitamin C, as vitamin C plays an extremely critical role in tissue repair. Vitamin C also stimulates collagen. Some good foods to try that are high in vitamin C include: Mangos, turnip greens, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, cantaloupe, oranges, berries, kiwi fruit, cabbage, kale, and peppers. It’s also a great idea to eat more foods that contain iron, zinc, vitamin A, and omega3’s. All of these are essential nutrients that can radically increase skin health. Some great foods that contain a lot of zinc are red meats, sunflower seeds, tofu, cooked greens, mushrooms, and beans. Meanwhile, some great foods for increasing the amount of vitamin A in your body include carrots, leafy green vegetables, and yellow or orange fruits.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be a great option for some people to help naturally treat acne breakouts, as well as having numerous other health benefits. In addition, if you feel your break outs are stress related, a type of acupuncture known as hormone related acupuncture can help.
Clay Based Masks
Clay based masks are another natural remedy known to help with breakouts. Be sure to make your own or get one without extra harsh chemicals added in order to get the full benefit with as minimal disadvantages as possible. Clay based masks are great for people with sensitive skin, due to their gentleness. They also help to remove pore clogging oils and dirt, as well as being great for drawing out impurities.
Clay Mask Recipe
Ingredients:
Bentonite clay
Apple cider vinegar
Directions:
Mix equal parts bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar. Then, apply and leave on for 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse with warm water and repeat weekly.
Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract is another great natural and easy to find remedy for treating acne and other skin related problems. Green tea is an antioxidant rich tea that can applied topically in order to help keep your skin clear. It does this by inhibiting the activity of your skin’s oil production cells. A good way to utilize green tea is listed as follows:
Brew a cup of green tea and then let it cool. Dip a clean wash cloth, cotton ball, or something similar in the tea. Press it gently on the affected areas for about 2 minutes each. Repeat as needed. You can do it a few nights a week, or nightly, or whatever works best for you. Due to green tea’s gentleness, it can be utilized more often than other natural remedies.
Exercise
Exercise is a great way to have healthy, almost glowing skin. Yes, you may sweat, but sweating actually helps to purge your body of toxins that can clog pores and cause unwanted blemishes! Exercise also stimulates blood circulation, which will in turn allow more nutrients to flood your skin. Exercise also reduces stress.
Stress
Eliminating stress from your body can help actually help to reduce your breakouts. While it seems strange to think that stress can cause acne, stress is actually often a cause, due to the adverse effects included with stress. You can work to eliminate stress from your body in many different ways. You can exercise like we just talked about. You can also mediate, which we discuss in the following:
Meditation
Meditation helps us to reconnect with ourselves. Examples of meditation include paying attention to our breathing and paying attention to our thoughts. Most of us are so smothered by our thoughts we lose the ability to reflect and the ability to sift through our minds. We become overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, depressed, etc. Using different meditation techniques is a great way to help your pursuit of a more peaceful and less stressful life; leading to a fuller life and allowing you to let go of things that may bring more stress.
Practicing relaxation and meditation regularly helps to decrease the wear and tear of life’s challenges on your mind and body. The most important thing to remember is; try different techniques and search for what works for you. You may strike out on your first few attempts but you are bound to find the right practice with time. A great way to keep track of what you are doing and how it makes you feel is to keep a journal of what is going on, what helps, and what doesn’t. If something brings up feelings for you write them down and then share them with your mental health care provider.
- Meditation before bed can also help with sleep issues. Since we know sleep is factor in depression, as well as other negative effects, anything we can do to help with sleep will help with overall health. - Remember when you do meditation it doesn’t have to be perfect or look like anyone else’s. Calming your mind can help with your mood. Take some time to meditate and feel the benefits it provides.
Sleep
Sleep is also important to your overall health. When you are sleep deprived, your skin will be the first place it will show. During sleep your body works to repair itself from the time you were up using and abusing it. When your body doesn’t have adequate time to repair itself, small problems start to become larger issues. This is when you see aging, acne, etc. Try to prioritize sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours at a minimum per night.
Avoid Touching Your Face
Finally, avoid touching your face. Every time you touch your face you add dirt and bacteria from your hands to it. This will clog your pores and make acne worse if you constantly touch your face.
So, in summary, we’ve discussed many ways in which we can combat acne. The most important thing to keep in mind is to keep trying different methods and to persevere. What works for you may not work for someone else, and vice versa. Maintain a good skin care regimen to keep your face clean is a great preventative. So, get started with trying some of these natural remedies and take some steps to a better, acne free life!
